The office is located in Kitale Town from where it operates (Ambwere Plaza, ground floor). The office was opened primarily to support KNCHR’s head office in addressing human rights issues that are unique and/or specific to the North Rift region.
Geographical Areas of Coverage
The office serves Uasin Gishu; Trans Nzoia; Elgeyo Marakwet and Baringo counties. The regional office also works in the larger Turkana and Pokot areas, as well as parts of Bungoma - in areas of Mt. Elgon – and South Rift.
Areas of focus
Institutional reforms - The office carries out monitoring and inspection of prison facilities and police stations to ensure that standards at which inmates are held meet minimum national and international human rights standards.
Public education - awareness raising and training through human rights clinics, distribution of IEC materials and consultative forums in a bid to address issues of transitional justice and good governance such as marginalization, historical land injustices, cattle rustling, poverty, military operations, tribal animosity and negative cultural practices that are common and prevalent in the region
