In April 2011, the KNCHR was designated as the national monitoring agency under Article 33(2) of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). This role obliges the KNCHR to monitor the extent to which persons with disabilities are able to have the benefit of their rights under the CRPD, the Constitution, and the Persons with Disability Act No. 14 of 2003.
In fulfilling this role, the KNCHR has embarked on a country-wide monitoring visits targeting learning institutions, hospitals, law courts, local authorities, caregivers, Disabled People Organizations (DPO’s) and other offices offering public services. So far, the KNCHR has visited, Elgeyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu, Machakos and Makueni counties which visits, have also been used to raise awareness on the rights of PWDs and to give feedback to duty bearers.
